Cold outreach is tough.
Most messages get ignored or rejected.
I remember the early days when I was struggling to connect with anyone.
But over time, I cracked the code and perfected my outreach strategy.
A system that helped me write irresistible cold outreach messages on LinkedIn.
It helped me book over 153,000 sales calls for my clients.
You might be skeptical that kind of result is possible.
Believe me, I felt the same way years ago!
But once I implemented these 5 simple outreach tricks, everything CHANGED.
Here are the 5 secrets that took my outreach results from 0 to 153,000+ calls (...you can copy these too):
1. Personalize messages by researching prospects beforehand to find hooks.
You're losing sales by not researching your prospects.
But what if I told you that:
You can get a 300% reply rate
You can close 10x more deals
You can stop using "spray and pray" tactics
By simply personalizing your cold outreach.
Here's how:
Research your prospect
Find a "hook" → 1-2 sentence personalization
Mention the hook in the opening line
Examples:
I see you love mountain biking
Saw you graduated from XYZ
Admire your work in [Niche]
Hooks are powerful because they:
Build rapport instantly
Make you seem credible
Show you did your homework
Create trust by focusing on them
It's simple yet so overlooked.
Do it right and watch it work.
2. Start by mentioning a common connection to increase trust and response rate.
The "trick" to cold outreach on LinkedIn:
"Commonality effect."
Done right, this technique works wonders.
The idea:
When you see someone you haven't met before, mention what you have in common first.
Some examples:
"You're from Sydney? I used to live there!"
"We both went to the same school, cool!"
"We both have marketing backgrounds, right?"
Why this works:
When you find a commonality with someone, you automatically assume they're part of your tribe, your in-group, a friend.
It's a shortcut for trust.
3. Spotlight their biggest business challenges and how you can help solve them.
"Stop cold pitching to SELL".
Start cold pitching to help.
So start with this:
Research: Find their problems
Understand: Their business
Focus: On their needs
Help: With free advice
Suggest: One solution
"I know you're currently struggling with X. I've helped other companies in your industry solve this before. Would you be interested in talking about how I could help you achieve this?"
That's it.
Try. This. Out.
Mention your client's wins.
Most people start their cold outreach messages with "I" and why they matter.
But the truth about people is that they care about themselves most.
So, start with results.
"I helped a client increase revenue by 35% by doing xyz"
"I helped save a client over $100k by doing abc"
"I helped a client land their dream job by doing def"
I call this the "Client Wins Technique".
And it works.
It's a powerful way to establish authority and prove how you can help.
It shows you're the real deal.
5. Use humor when appropriate to stand out in the inbox.
“Why did the tomato turn red?”
“Why?”
“Because it saw the salad dressing!”
(awkward silence)
coughs
Okay, that was a horrible joke.
But you know what's even worse? Getting cold outreach messages that read like sales pitches.
The way to stand out in the inbox? Humor.
Humor can:
Help you connect with the recipient
Make you more human
Make you more memorable
Break the ice
It's important to note that humor can backfire if it’s offensive, too cheesy or inappropriate for the situation.
When used correctly, humor can help you win over potential clients or make new connections with people in your industry.
Use wisely.
Final thoughts
Cold outreach is tough, but extremely rewarding when done right.
By leading with value instead of a sales pitch, you distinguish yourself from the noise.
Get personal with some humor and charm to connect on a human level.
Do your research to uncover pain points and provide solutions.
If you follow these guidelines, you'll be well on your way to outreach mastery.

Nick
