Tip 1: Research Their Profile Thoroughly

Don't just glance at their current title and company.

Dive deep into their full experience history, volunteer work, education, skills, and interests.

Follow up on projects and accomplishments they list to understand context.

Notice if they post articles and content frequently and read what it's about.

The more nuggets you uncover about their priorities, challenges, and goals, the better.

Tip 2: Think About How You Can Actually Help

Get very specific by role and industry in thinking through valuable connections, advice, or resources you might offer, even if unrelated to your services.

For example,

Could you make an intro to an expert source for an article they're writing?

Provide a template that could help them do their job better?

Point them to a course to build a skill they need?

Offer stats or frameworks that tie to top goals stated on their profile?

Tip 3: Make the First Message About Them

Compliment an award, major project, or promotion they recently achieved that caught your attention.

Tell them why it impressed you or stood out.

Ask thoughtful questions about the focus area they list on their profile to prompt them to share more about their current challenges and goals.

Center the dialogue around their current situation.

And outlook first before bringing it back to you.

Tip 4: Personalize Every Message

Ask different questions of each prospect based specifically on what you notice about them.

Spotlight different accomplishments from their background in your opening message.

Tie advice, connections, and resources back to their exact role and interests.

Re-read each message and ask yourself:

If I swapped the name out, would this still sound personalized to the recipient?

If so, keep customizing.

Tip 5: Follow Up With Value, Not Pitching

Rather than immediately touting your services, share relevant:

  • Articles

  • Tools

  • Tips

  • Connections

…to help them based on previous dialogue - no strings attached.

Seek to assist first with no expectation.

Once you build relationship credibility and value, you can mention how you may be uniquely able to further help based on what you've learned about their needs.

But lead with value first, always.

"They don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Outreach is about them first - what you can do to help, solve problems, or connect value

Do this genuinely and consistently and your hit rate will transform overnight.
